SUMMARY

 

The librarian and member of the editorial board Aldona Šiaulienė Writes about young readers’ activities in library during the summer time in the Introductory article entitled “Summer and Books”.

Gražina Skabeikytė analyses three books by Juozas Erlickas. The latter is a Lithuanian National Award winner who he entered world of children’s poetry as an author being an experienced writer of fiction for adults. His short poems for children are very specific: they are comical as well as lyrical and philosophical; political themes, the motifs of Birth and Death pictured in them clearly stand out in the context of the Lithuanian poetry for children and young adults.

The next article is reprinted from the Swedish magazine “Opsis Kalopsis”. Maria Nikolajevą discusses the popularity of “Harry Potter” by K. J. Rowling. Boarding school story and fantasy are combined in the plot of the book, states the scholar. Strong and lucky heroe and very typical components of traditional children’s literature (optimism, happy ending with the good winning over the evil, simple and repetitive structure, etc.) also add significantly to the popularity of the book.

In the “Anniversaries” section, the young scholar Kristina Kazakevičiūtė tells about the French author Fenelon, whose “The Adventures of Telemachus” is often presented as the first book for children in the world.

The most popular Lithuanian writer for children Vytautas Račickas is the “heroe” of the section entitled “Books of My Childhood”. He answers Elona Varnauskienė’s questions and tells about his childhood, the first books he read, the books he wrote himself, and so on.

“At a Closer Look” or the Review section contains reviews of four books: “I likę You” by Achim Bröger, “Dragon’s Wings” and “A Little Vampire hasn’t to be Alone” by Renate Welsh, and “Mathematics and Love Passions” by Zimmermans.

The caption “Introductions” is devoted to the Janusz Korczak literary award Kęstutis Urba offers a list of books to be recommended for the 9th and the l0th grades. Roma Kišūnaitė has drafted a “Children’s Literature Calendar 2002”. A number of events are described and announcements published in the last pages of the magazine.
