SUMMARY
The issue begins with an article by Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, the Editor-in-Chief, Kanoniškojo Čiurlionio metus palydint (Accompanying the Year of the Canonical Čiurlionis), which, in light of the importance of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and his creative legacy, addresses the problem of constructing a canon for Lithuanian children’s and young adult literature. In the rubric “The Postcards to the Reader,” the writer Lina Žutautė is introduced to readers. In the rubric “The Anniversaries”, Dalia Karatajienė’s article on the artist Taida Balčiūnienė (in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of her birth) is published, along with the article by Regina Kvašytė and Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, Anos Saksės Pasakos apie gėles: gėlė kaip kūrinio semantikos ašis (rašytojos 120-osioms gimimo metinėms) (Anna Sakse’s Tales of Flowers: The Flower as the Semantic Axis of the Work (dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the writer’s birth)). In the “Retro” rubric, Anykščių baladės (The Anykščiai Ballads) created by the writer Bronė Buivydaitė is discussed (published in honour of the 130th anniversary of the writer’s birth). This material was prepared by the museologist Rasa Bražėnaitė. In the “The Articles” rubric, both distant (Japanese) and neighbouring (Latvian) traditions of children’s literature are explored. It features a richly illustrated review article by Eiko Sakurai, Japonų vaikų literatūra: praeitis ir dabartis (Japanese Children’s Literature: Past and Present), and an article by Rudīte Rinkeviča, Ryga šiuolaikinėje latvių vaikų prozoje (Riga in Contemporary Latvian Children’s Prose), which discusses works by two of the most prominent contemporary Latvian children’s writers – Luīze Pastore and Juris Zvirgzdiņš – whose stories are set in Latvia’s capital, Riga. Asta Plechavičiūtė’s article serves as a complement to her Latvian colleague’s contribution, examining the representation of Vilnius, the capital of the other Baltic state – Lithuania – in Lithuanian works of fiction for children and young adults. In the rubric “Photos Tell,” Aldona Šiaulienė shares her impressions of the presentation of Vytautas Landsbergis’ children’s book Čia rimtai vaikai (This is Serious – Children) (2006), which took place in Šiauliai. In the “Scientific Research” rubric, two articles are published: Vaiva Schoroškienė and Rugilė Juodytė-Matulevičienė’s article “Ar mokame atpažinti 3–4 metų vaikų gebėjimą skaityti paveikslėlių knygas?” (How Can we Recognize the Ability of 3–4-Year-Olds to Read Picturebooks?) and Aleksandra Strelcova’s article “Paauglystės reprezentacija vyresniesiems paaugliams skirtoje lietuvių autorių kūryboje” (Representation of Adolescence in Lithuanian Young Adult Literature for Older Teenagers). In the rubric “The Readings of My Childhood”, Professor Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė interviews the Lithuanian artist and renowned master of book graphics, Bronius Leonavičius. In the “The Contexts” rubric, Eglė Baliutavičiūtė’s article “Užsienyje apie lietuvių vaikų literatūrą” (Lithuanian Children’s Literature Abroad) is published, presenting reflections by foreign specialists on the most recent Lithuanian children’s literature. In the “Mom, Dad, Read to Me!” rubric, Urtė Uliūnė’s fairy tale “Klasta miestelio krautuvėje” (Trickery in the Town Shop) is published. The journal concludes with the rubric “Chronicle. Information. Announcements” and the back cover story “Kauno kaukai” (Kaunas Ghosts), prepared by Kristina Vaisvalavičienė. It presents the mythical creatures, sprites, created by sculptors Artūras Žilinskas and Lukas Šiupšinskas, which adorn public spaces throughout the city of Kaunas.
