SUMMARY
There are no small literatures, states Kęstutis Urba in the Introductory, and regrets, the translations of books for children into Lithuanian dominated by English and American literature. Three article about the situation in Estonia remind us, how rich and interesting is our neighboursʼ literature for children as well. Jaanika Palm discusses the very new books, while Aino Pervik in her article „Between Good and Evil“ analyses fantasies in the Soviettime Estonian childrenʼs literature. The article by Kazuto Matsumura „The Raggie flies to Japan“ should be also interesting to Lithuanian readers, since Sipsik by Eno Raud was very popular in Lithuania some years ago. (The last two publications are reprinted from the Estonian magazine „Nukits“.) Some fragments from Sirli, Siim ja saladused by Andrus Kivirähk (in the section „Letʼs read together, Mother, Father!“) illustrate tendencies of modern Estonian fiction for children. The presentation of Estonian Childrenʼs Literature Information Centre (in the „Introductions“ section) finally demonstrates what big attention is payed to the Estonian literature in the present issue of RUBINAITIS.
Two articles are dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the prominent poet Leonardas Žitkevičius. Vilnius university student Laima Kryževičiūtė presents his biography, and Gražina Skabeikytė (doctor of humanities, Kaunas Vytautas Magnus university) analyses his poetry for children.
„I am teachersʼ boy and it is the characteristic of my childhood“, says the famous translator Teodoras Četrauskas interwieved by Gintarė Adomaitytė. „Humour! – thatʼs why I like books for children so much“, concludes the translator.
Summer Tale by Vytautas Tamulaitis, Romain Kalbris by Hector Malot and Double Act by Jacqueline Wilson are reviewed in „Reviews“ section.
Roma Kišūnaitė has drafted a „Childrenʼs Literature Calendarʼ2005“.
