SUMMARY

The introductory text by Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, Editor-in-Chief, reveals why it is crucial for a child reader to discover images of their country – Lithuania, its cities and towns, and to recognize their environment. It is an essential factor in attracting the reader – a convincing example would be Rimantas Kmita’s novel Pietinia kronikas (The Southside Chronicles), which depicts the city of Šiauliai. To highlight the International Children’s Book Day, the poem “The Language of Pictures” by Rian Visser from the Netherlands and a poster of that country, drawn by artist Janneke Ipenburg, are being published. The traditional rubric “The Reviews” features publications evaluating Lithuanian children’s literature in 2024: Laimutė Adomavičienė writes about realistic prose, Gražina Skabeikytė-Kazlauskienė – about poetry, and Jolita Liškevičienė – about illustrations in books by Lithuanian authors. The “Retro” rubric features Daiva Irena Šarkanauskaitė’s publication “Kita Aldonos Liobytės meilė” (The Other Love of Aldona Liobytė). The “Anniversaries” rubric commemorates the 140th anniversary of the birth of Juozas Balčikonis, a well-known linguist and translator of foreign children’s literature classics. Rita Urnėžiūtė analyses his translations of Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tales. Gražina Skabeikytė-Kazlauskienė writes about the complex biography of Kazys Boruta and his works for children (to commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth). In the rubric “Photos Tell”, Roma Kišūnaitė tells about the trip of the Lithuanian IBBY department members to Dresden, where they visited Erich Kestner’s favourite places in Dresden. In the rubric “The Articles”, an article by Inga Mitunevičiūtė “Doubt that Avoids Helplessness and Confidence that does not Succumb to Pride: Philosophical Literature for Children” is published. The topic of this article is developed in an interview with philosopher Algis Mickūnas, written by the same author, and published in the rubric “The Readings of my Childhood”. The rubric “I Read a Lot” includes an article by Rita Karpavičienė, “They have Read, Liked them, and Now are Recommending!” where the author presents the book review competition for schoolchildren dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Rubinaitis. In the rubric “With a Close Glance”, Modesta Jurgaitytė analyses the collection of poems by Česlovas Navakauskas Aibė raibė begalinė, Kristina Tutlytė writes about the comic strip Keliuonė. Įmink Šiaulius (Journey. Get to Šiauliai) by Rimantas Kmita and Povilas Vincentas Jankūnas, written in the urban dialect of Šiauliai. Ieva Rudžianskaitė reviews Lina Navickaitė’s fictional novel Ketvertas su paukščiu: naujoji ir senoji salų istorija (The Four with a Bird: The New and Old History of the Islands). Also, there is a bibliography list of 2024 children’s and adolescents’ books compiled by Roma Kišūnaitė in the form of a QR code. This author also prepared the rubric “Chronicle. Information. Announcements”, where the obituary of the famous translator and writer Teodoras Četrauskas is published. On the back cover, you can admire the images of Pinocchio created by Lithuanian artists Alfonsas Čepauskas, Valentinas Antanavičius, Petras Repšys, Rimantas Vincentas Gibavičius in their ex-libris, which are stored in Gerardas Bagdonavičius ex-libris fund of Šiauliai County Povilas Višinskis Public Library.
