SUMMARY
The second issue of Rubinaitis of the year 2023 is dedicated to the 700th anniversary of Vilnius. Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė, the Editor-in-Chief, writes about this in the Preface of the magazine. For this occasion, two articles have been published: Gražina Skabeikytė-Kazlauskienė’s “Vilnius in Lithuanian Children’s Poetry” and Asta Plechavičiūtė’s “Walks around Vilnius”, where cognitive books about Vilnius for children and teenagers by Lithuanian authors are analysed. The theme of Vilnius is developed in the rubric “Retro”, thus, Reda Tamulienė reviews the famous Lithuanian children’s literary magazine Genys, where in 1973 and 1979, it was written about the visions of Vilnius future architecture. In the rubric “Photos Tell”, the photographs of Janina Degutytė, Martynas Vainilaitis, Aldona Liobytė as well as Sigutė and Vytautas Valiai, the artists and illustrators of children’s literature, which were taken between 1952 and 1966 in Vilnius, have been published. In the latter publication, the artists’ impressions of Vilnius were summarized in the poet Martynas Vainilaitis’ saying “I have realized how precious and beautiful our capital is”. Traditionally, in the second issue of the year, the speech of the winners of Pranas Mašiotas prize has been published. This year, these are the speeches of the writer Justinas Žilinskas and the artist Ūla Šveikauskaitė, who created the highly rated illustrated novel Bėgliai: jūrų keliais į Ameriką (Fugitives: On the Seaways towards America) (2022). In the rubric “The Reviews”, Asta Skujytė-Razmienė analyses the Lithuanian realistic prose for children and the youth of the year 2022, Inga Mitunevičiūtė discusses a variety of translated books for children and teenagers, whilst Dalia Karatajienė evaluates the illustrations of children’s and teenagers’ books by Lithuanian authors of the year 2022. In the rubric “The Anniversaries”, Džiuljeta Maskuliūnienė analyses the didactic work of the creator of the early stage of Lithuanian children’s literature, Ksaveras Sakalauskas-Vanagėlis (dedicated to the 160th anniversary of his birth), Eglė Baliutavičiūtė analyses the picture books for children of the famous American author Maurice Sendak (dedicated to the 95th anniversary of his birth). Five new poems for children by Evelina Daciūtė have been published in the rubric “Let’s Read, Mom and Dad!”. In the rubric “The Readings of My Childhood”, the writer Gintarė Adomaitytė interviews the scientist and children’s writer Remigijus Misiūnas. The magazine contains a bibliography “About Children’s Literature and Reading in 2022”, compiled by the bibliographer Roma Kišūnaitė. As usual, the magazine ends with the rubric “Chronicle. Information. Advertisements” (prepared by Roma Kišūnaitė). On the back cover, in the rubric “Writers and Characters of Children’s Literature in Artworks”, there are miniatures of various artists dedicated to children’s writers Sigitas Geda, Bitė Vilimaitė, Rimantas Černiauskas, Ramutė Skučaitė, Ona Jautakė, which expressively decorate Literatų street in Vilnius.
